Google's AI Max Is Changing the Rules of Search Ads

Google is moving older Search campaign features towards AI Max, with automatic upgrades beginning later this year and Dynamic Search Ads following in 2027. Australian small businesses should treat the window as a governance decision, not a button to press.

Google's AI Max Is Changing the Rules of Search Ads

Google is moving its Search advertising system towards AI Max. The company first announced the transition from Dynamic Search Ads on 15 April 2026, then updated the timetable on 11 June in its official AI Max announcement. Campaigns using Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match are scheduled to begin automatic upgrades in September 2026, while Dynamic Search Ads upgrades will begin in February 2027.

This is not just a new ad format. AI Max changes how a campaign finds opportunities, matches search intent, writes parts of the ad and chooses the landing page that a customer sees. Google is moving more of the decision-making from a list of manually maintained settings into an AI system that interprets the business and the search together.

That can be useful for an Australian small business, but only when the business gives the system a clear operating boundary. Google Ads' official account recently highlighted the very local version of the problem: how to stop an AI Max campaign sending a searcher to a landing page on the opposite side of the country. More reach is not automatically better reach.

This is a campaign operating change, not another checkbox

Older search campaigns often feel understandable because the owner can point to keywords, ads and landing pages. AI Max is designed to widen the relationship between those parts. It can use broader intent signals, adapt text and expand the final URL when Google's system believes another page better fits the query.

Google says AI Max Search campaigns see an average of 7 per cent more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS when the full feature suite is used, compared with search-term matching alone. That is Google's internal data for non-retail advertisers, not an independent guarantee or an Australian small-business benchmark. The number is still useful because it explains the commercial bet: more relevant search coverage, with more of the decisions handled by the platform.

The trade-off is control. If the campaign does not understand the service area, exclusions, margins, seasonal offer or difference between a premium job and a low-value enquiry, it can optimise efficiently towards the wrong outcome. Automation does not remove strategy. It makes the quality of the strategy more consequential.

Why Australian small businesses should care

A local business rarely has one universal landing page. A plumber may serve some suburbs but not others. A clinic may offer different treatments at different locations. A builder, accountant, studio or retailer may have clear limits on what it can promise, where it can deliver and which customers are commercially worthwhile.

When an AI system is allowed to match searches and pages more broadly, those boundaries need to be visible in the business's digital information. The issue is not only whether an ad gets a click. It is whether the click lands on the right offer, in the right place, with enough context for the customer to trust the next step.

That also changes how owners should read performance. A campaign can generate more impressions and clicks while quietly creating more poor-fit enquiries, longer sales conversations or leads from areas the team cannot service. The right measure is not how much freedom the AI has. It is whether the extra reach creates profitable customer conversations.

The timeline gives owners a useful window

The automatic upgrade dates are not a reason to panic, and they are not a reason to wait until the platform makes the decision for you. Google says the changes apply to eligible campaigns and has extended the Dynamic Search Ads transition to February 2027. That gives businesses time to understand which campaigns are carrying real commercial intent and which ones are relying on old settings that no one has reviewed in years.

The important preparation is strategic rather than mechanical. The business needs a reliable source of truth for services, locations, offers, availability and exclusions. It needs landing pages that say what the business actually does. It needs reporting that distinguishes new demand from irrelevant reach. It also needs someone who can spot when an automated improvement is technically efficient but commercially wrong.

What good control looks like

  • Search automation can explore new intent while service areas, exclusions and commercial boundaries remain explicit.
  • The website gives the campaign system accurate evidence about offers, locations, prices and the customers each page is meant to serve.
  • Landing-page expansion is judged by customer fit and conversion quality, not just by whether the platform found another URL.
  • Reporting separates profitable new demand from brand traffic, poor-fit leads and activity that the team cannot service.
  • A human review remains part of the operating rhythm when budgets, locations, promises or major campaign settings change.

Do not let the platform write your local strategy

This is a different challenge from the one we covered in AI Mode paid visibility. That post looked at the difference between buying an ad and earning a citation in an AI answer. AI Max is about how much control to hand over inside the paid campaign itself. Both point to the same commercial lesson: a new search surface does not remove the need for a grounded digital strategy.

NextAura helps Australian businesses connect SEO, AI SEO and paid-search visibility to the real offer, service area and customer journey. We handle the optimising and automating around the campaign so the platform can find more of the right demand without quietly sending your budget in the wrong direction. If AI Max is changing how your Search campaigns work, get in touch and we will help you make the transition on business terms.
